Rail has long been a cornerstone of Applied Logistic’s suite of services. We love that rail is economical, efficient and environmentally responsible. Rail is also secure, smooth and reliable.
Rail is best suited to general freight through consolidators (or forwarders) or full loads over longer distances.
Linehaul rail operators (such as Aurizon) only accept loaded shipping containers. Applied Logistics is able to provide you with a full service, including road cartage and both standard and specialised shipping containers to handle your freight.
We have direct access to Aurizon, Pacific National, SCT, GWA and TasRail services, as well as through forwarders such as Toll, Sadleirs, NTFS, K&S Group and Rand Transport.

- Building materials
Rail has certain limitations when it comes to large items. Typically, we are limited to 13.7m in length, 2.5m in width and 2.6m in height – although this does depend on a lot of factors. Typically rail is inefficient for moving cars and small items.
Freight trains no longer stops at all stations, in fact, the major rail terminals in Australia are listed below:
- Mount Isa
- Bell Bay
- Brighton (Hobart)
- Alice Springs
- Tennant Creek
TasRail operate intermodal terminals at Burnie (the port for Toll Shipping), Devonport (the port for SeaRoad and the Spirit of Tasmania), Bell Bay, Conara and Brighton (Hobart).
Oversize and overweight freight
Often we find that people overlook rail as a means to transport unusual items, when rail is actually very flexible. We are able to move items up to 2.7m in height east of Adelaide, and depending on the route, we can handle significantly over width loads. Rail also allows us to move very heavy loads economically. We can load 27-28 tonnes into a 20′ container, which would require a B-Double to transport long distances on road.
We work with our clients to provide the best possible solution to your needs. Sometimes you need speed – and rail can be competitive in this space over longer distances, such as Melbourne to Perth or Brisbane. We have access to express freight trains from all capital cities to Perth, which can be faster than road. Other times, you need a focus on safety and protecting your freight.
The thing that rail is best at is providing a reliable, consistent and trustworthy service. If you have regular movements, we can reduce your stress through rail’s reliability, whilst reducing your costs and increasing your environmental credentials.
When you need help
Applied Logistics is here to solve your logistical challenges. We always have contingency plans for when things don’t quite go according to plan. Usually there is only one major incident on rail each year – but we have solutions for when this occurs. in 2015, floods wiped out the line between Taree and Newcastle for two weeks. During this time, we were able to road freight our client’s freight to Sydney, so that they could catch the train to Perth. Rail is resilient and extremely safe compared to Road. Rest assured that when you partner with us, we have the ability to get you back on track ASAP.
